George Washington is credited with saying, “We should not look back unless it is to derive useful lessons from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dearly bought experience.” Easy for him to say…he’s a founding father of the United States of America and is now a leading man in the smash hit musical Hamilton complete with sold out shows and ticket prices in the thousands. Me…I’m just trying to launch a new website.
So what is my useful lesson? Well, if I am being honest…in the last iteration of the CMO Council website, we made it REALLY hard for you to find anything. You had to REALLY want it.
In other words: We totally lost sight of our customer and tried to get you to think and talk like we do.
Loosing sight of your customer because of an internally focused culture isn’t unique…but it sure is ironic when the last couple of reports I have written all talk about customer centricity and remembering how your customer searches, consumes and engages. So we took a step back…grabbed some piles of data…and took a long hard look at ourselves.
This new website is our attempt to right the ship and head in a different direction…a direction that our users were already trying to go. We have created categories and tags based on what you, our visitors and members searched for the most on our old site. We have created easy to navigate pages outlining all of the CMO Council’s reports and programs that not only show you all of the content products associated with any specific conversation, but also provides suggestions of other reports that might interest you.
While we have made significant changes to how the massive library of the CMO Council is organized, the biggest change has actually been to our Premium Membership offering. For Premium Members, there is now an exclusive area of the site we call CMO+. It is an area to showcase your own thought leadership, make recommendations on things like events that are must-attend for you, books you would recommend to peers and even an area to ask questions of your peers.
As with any website, it is a constantly evolving beast. This site will keep changing and improving and thanks to how you engage with it, we will keep taking those data queues and follow your lead.
